Managerial Interview Round

What is managerial round ( M.R. ) ?

Managerial round is conducted an interview round conducted between Technical interview and H.R. interview.
Generally it will be conducted at the end of your technical interview and they won't tell you specifically that "now we are going to take Managerial interview", instead they just start asking questions about management at work.

This round is for checking your "management skills". That means how you are going to handle different day to day situations at your work place. Most importantly they want see "how you make decisions and win other employee's and team mate's cooperation while dealing with their personal issues".

Because we know this now we have to follow certain rules while answering the questions :

1. Don't be too strict and harsh while answering.

2. Don't stick to the rules of the company. Yes, you must follow them, but in order to manage work you have to give certain freedoms to your subordinates and coworkers.

3. Golden rule : "completing given work within the deadline is absolutely necessary".
Only exception to this rule is the case when its a matter of life and death for someone else ( a family member or even a stranger )

4. Golden rule : "Company first".
Always remember you can't make everybody happy. Although you will try, but you must admit that someday, someone is going to be disappointed. Now you have to make sure that your answer may put you in his bad books but you should avoid doing anything that puts your company at a disadvantage.

5.  You must have an explanation for every answer you give therefore take some time and think before saying anything. Last thing you want in an interview is to take back your words.

In managerial round they will check you managerial skill. So try to give diplomatic answer. Diplomacy here means to create a win win situation for everybody and if that's not possible then at least try to make it look like that. And be ready because for your every answer they will ask another counter question to make sure that you have a solid reason behind your decision.

To elaborate what these rules mean a few questions asked there are given below :

1. Suppose you have urgent/important work in office that need to complete till tomorrow and someone in your family is critically sick
which needs you immediately then what will you do? Work or Family?

Possible answer : Rule no. 3

As I mentioned above this case is an exception so tell them you will take care of that person.

Counter question : So you will leave the work ?

Answer : You may ask someone else to complete that work OR you can do it tomorrow with taking responsibility for the delay, but you won't be able to do anything if something bad happens to that person.

Remember that if they don't mention that the person is critically ill or needs you immediately you may say that you will manage both the jobs, but in most of the cases interviewer will push you until you have to choose one of them. Never-ever say that you will sacrifice that person or abandon him/her for the company because that means you are selfish and will abandon the company in time of need. You will be rejected for sure.

2. Suppose you get a project/work and you do not know something. Your seniors are very cruel as well as your boss is annoyed with you. Then what will you do? You will keep toiling on your own or will you ask your cruel seniors or boss?

Possible answer : Rule no. 4

You will ask your subordinates to see if they know it. Take help online or with some books.

Counter question : No, only your seniors know it. Now what ?

Possible answer : I will ask my seniors.

Counter question : They may harass you ?

Possible answer : May be, but if I don't get the job done properly company's reputation may be ruined. ( you are preferring company over you )

Counter question : What if they refuse to answer, as they are annoyed with you ?

Possible answer : They will answer, because they are seniors so they must know to put work before any personnel dispute. ( be positive about the situation and other's attitude ).

3. Suppose your team get a job and one of your team member is not supporting/doing work. What will you do ?

Possible answer : rule no. 3

I will try to make him/her cooperate. With friendship, motivation, peer or senior pressure etc.

Counter question : Nothing is working. Now what ?

Possible answer : I will contact my seniors and ask them to replace him/her.

Counter question : There is shortage of man power so they can't do it now.

Possible answer : We will divide the work between the team.

Counter question : your team is not willing to do someone else' work, because they are already doing there job.

Possible answer : If that's the case I will try to complete his work with my work and make sure that this incident is reported to the senior employees because that person's laziness may harm our company's reputation.

Now interviewers will have tears in their eyes by seeing how sincere and hard working you are, they will hug you and tell you that you are selected ( LOL !!! just kidding, actually there is one more interview ahead called H.R. round)

Always remember that you have to answer according to the situation, but only thing you need to keep insisting is that you will try your best to complete your work in timeDo not lie and do not hesitate to accept that you are wrong or that you don't know certain things. It's fine, you are a human after all.

Best of Luck.
